The operation of the legal division they oversee is often solely the responsibility of the managing attorney, which is why many jobs require individuals to demonstrate leadership experience. Having a business background is often an advantage as well. They also have to ensure their policies and procedures comply with local and national laws and regulations in order to avoid sanctions or disbarment.

These attorneys often report to directors of the programs, but they are also responsible for overseeing the delivery of legal services in the communities in which they serve.
