Becoming a renewable energy consultant requires a broad knowledge of energy issues in various industries. The renewable energy field is growing fast with new technologies and policies. Many businesses are concerned about their energy consumption and carbon footprint. These are the companies who are hiring energy consultants.

Now is an opportune time to become a renewable energy consultant. A renewable energy consultant typically has at least a four-year college degree and sometimes has completed graduate studies. Although some universities are beginning to offer specific renewable energy-related courses, few have designated renewable energy consultant programs. A background in engineering or one of the energy-related sciences is beneficial.

Consultants help organizations. Becoming a renewable energy consultant will require people skills as well as energy knowledge. The consultants help corporations, large and small, public and private, assess their energy bills. They must be up-to-date on laws and regulations. A renewable energy consultant often tracks energy bills for the client and offers knowledge about incentives or rebates.

Many energy consultant firms exist today. To become a renewable energy consultant means working around other energy consultants and exchanging current information. This may mean being hired by an energy consulting firm or starting your own business.

The renewable energy field is a fast-growing field full of ideas and information. Not all the information available to consumers and companies, however, is accurate. In order to become a renewable energy consultant who is respected and trusted, read as many reputable journals and reports as possible. Clients must build that trust with their energy consultants for the partnership to be successful. You will receive new clients by providing accurate information to existing clients via referrals.

@Anon155472- Another type of certification you might be interested in would be the Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) Certification by ASHRAE. ASHRAE professionals are well respected in the energy and engineering world, and BEAP applies to energy management in the built environment. BEAP certified professionals are certified to assess residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

This would be a great certification to pursue if you want a job making energy conservation recommendations to clients regarding their buildings. The prerequisites are just as high as those for the CEM, but the certification lets clients know that you have meet these stringent requirements and have been tested in every aspect of energy conservation.

@anon155472- I am not a professional in the field, but I am in the process of finishing school for this sort of thing. I am a Sustainability and Energy major, and I am looking to go into grad school for Energy and Resources. The CEM certification is given by the AEE, and it is the most technical of the three you have listed. You need a certain amount of education in combination with experience in the field of energy management. I would say that this would be one of the best credentials because it covers a broad range of energy management categories (17) of which a successful candidate must master at least 11.

LEED has little requirements as far as education is concerned, and only requires that a person worked on a single LEED project for AP certification. BPI only applies to residential properties, and would do little for those who serve corporate clients. It really comes down to what skills you are looking to certify and your educational/work experience.
