What does a Room Attendant do?

A room attendant is responsible for making sure guest rooms, hallways, and common areas at a motel or hotel are kept clean and safe. Among many other duties, he or she dusts furniture, vacuums floors, scrubs bathrooms, and changes bedding. He or she also restocks guest rooms with towels and other amenities on a daily basis to ensure visitors have everything they need. Most have standard morning and afternoon work hours.

Developing a strong reputation for cleanliness is one of the most important elements of running a successful hotel. Room attendants keep their establishments looking attractive with their expert housekeeping skills. They thoroughly vacuum and dust sleeping spaces, sanitize bathrooms, and make beds. Vacant rooms are inspected to ensure they are fully stocked with toilet paper, towels, and soaps before guests arrive. They are also responsible for checking smoke alarms, lights, remote controls, and other permanent fixtures to make sure they are in proper working order.

Room attendants generally begin their daily cleaning duties around check-out time, in the early afternoon hours for most hotels. In the morning, they review charts to see which rooms are vacant and ready to be cleaned. If a room is still occupied, the attendant will knock before entering to see if the visitors are away or to ask when they want housekeeping services. Trustworthiness is an extremely important characteristic for someone in this position, as he or she constantly works around both valuable hotel property and guest belongings.

It is also important for a room attendant to be courteous to guests and knowledgeable about the hotel. He or she is usually expected to help visitors with any questions they may have about hotel policies, instead of simply directing them to the front desk for answers. Strong communication skills and a friendly attitude are essential to ensure guests enjoy their stays.

There are generally few education and training requirements to become a room attendant. Most hotels will hire people who have high school diplomas and the physical ability necessary to perform the job well. A criminal background check may be performed prior to starting work to make sure a prospective worker is trustworthy. Most trainee attendants work alongside other housekeepers for several days to learn the routine and pick up important skills. With experience and proven reliability, a person may be able to advance to a supervisory position within a few months or years.

Room attendants must work by category priority. Check out rooms that are also arrival rooms must get cleaned first. If not, business comes to a screeching halt. This is why the room attendant may not get to your room until the afternoon.

As there is a high employee turnover rate in this occupation, many hotels are also dealing with a shortage of staff. Stay over guests are always on my mind throughout the work day, but due to hotel policy, their rooms are not the first on the list of housekeeping duties.

@Subway11 - I know what you mean, but they might be on a schedule and that is when they happened to hit your room. I think that my pet peeve with respect to the housekeeping room attendant is when they don’t leave me any shampoo or conditioner.

I wash my hair everyday so I need a replenishment of my shampoo and conditioner daily. It doesn’t happen too often, but when it does they normally bring it to me right away.

I just hate having to ask for it. For the most part I have had really great experiences with the room attendants I just don’t like when there is no shampoo or conditioner. I have to use conditioner daily or my hair starts to look like straw.

@SurfNTurf - I know what you are talking about. When I stayed at a Disney hotel the room attendants did the same thing. I think that they are trained to do that. It was a lot of fun when they left little sculptures on the bed.

I think that my only pet peeve with respect to the housekeeping room attendants was when they don’t clean the room until the afternoon. When I come back from the park and am exhausted, I really want to relax.

I don’t want to have the room attendant clean the room while I am in it. It just makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I really can’t relax when the room attendant is in the room.

I have to say that I love when the room service attendant would make little sculptures from the existing hand towels and wash cloths when we went on your cruise. She was so creative and my kids could not wait to find out what else she was going to do.

I really like the fact that a housekeeping room attendant takes the time to do something like this. She really deserves a great tip.
